Prescribed Burning Season Begins 🔥 Rangers in the central and east Kimberley have begun their annual prescribed burning program, marking the start of important early dry season fire management work. This week we’re featuring the Gooniyandi Mens Rangers - Alden, Kaunell and Marty - who spent time ground burning around Joy Springs Community and Mimbi Caves with KLC Fire Officers Hylke & Amos! By carrying out carefully planned aerial and ground burns during the cooler months, highly-trained rangers help reduce the scale and intensity of destructive late-season fires. This proactive approach, often referred to as “cool burning”, is a key part of caring for country and protecting both people and biodiversity. Supported by the KLC, this landscape-scale work delivers wide-ranging benefits. Early season prescribed burning helps reduce the overall area affected by fire and limits the spread of large, high-intensity blazes later in the year. It also plays a vital role in protecting wildlife. By creating a mosaic of burnt and unburnt areas, animals have better access to shelter and food, reducing the distances they need to travel to survive. This is especially important for vulnerable species like the bilby and safeguard sensitive environments such as monsoon vine thickets and rainforest pockets, which are particularly vulnerable to intense fires. It also lowers risks to communities, infrastructure, and culturally significant sites across the region. Fire management is a shared responsibility, and community safety remains a priority. If you are ever concerned about a fire, call 000 immediately.
