Together with a group of curious coaches and leaders, we explored a live coaching conversation from our Open Coaching Room, where I had the privilege of coaching a client while participants observed and reflected on the process as it unfolded—in all its simplicity, authenticity, and complexity. With the thoughtful facilitation of Toril Nygreen Grave, MCC participants reflected on questions such as: • What created value for the client? • What seemed to have the greatest impact? What struck me most was the richness of perspectives. The same conversation led to different insights, different observations, and different learning for each participant. As the coach in the conversation, I found the reflections just as valuable as anyone else. They reminded me that there is never only one way to understand what happens in a coaching conversation, and that we all continue to learn through dialogue, observation, and shared reflection. And yet, beneath all those perspectives, there was a common question: What is it that actually makes a coach truly great? Inspired by the reflections from the webinar and several recent conversations on the LEARN Coaching Podcast, I decided to capture some of my own thoughts on the subject. One conclusion keeps returning: Great coaching is about much more than methods and techniques. It's about presence, self-awareness, humility, and a genuine commitment to the person sitting in front of us.
