“𝑩𝒐𝒐, 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒎𝒔 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒑𝒐𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒎𝒚 𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒎. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒈𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒈𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒏 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒑𝒔. 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒔𝒐 𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒖𝒏𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒖𝒍. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒆 𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒃𝒍𝒆, 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆.” My answer was simple: We live in a free world. If people no longer see a future with you, they will leave. This is a business… not a triad. Nobody owes us lifelong loyalty just because we once gave them a job or paid them well. Let’s also be honest with ourselves. 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐦 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞, 𝐰𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐠𝐨, 𝐭𝐨𝐨. 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐰𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠? Loyalty cannot be demanded. It can only be earned. Are they feasting at the same table and sipping champagne, flying first class with you during good times? If they arent, then dont expect them to treat you like your family. So instead of whining or guilt-tripping about those who leave, focus on those who stay on or the new ones who are about to join you. Show them their decision was the right one. Rebuild the team. And when the firm rises again, make sure the ones who stood with you are rewarded accordingly. 𝑷.𝑺.
