What Geology Taught Me About Strategy #6: Uniformitarianism One of the most important principles in geology is Uniformitarianism. It states that the geological processes we observe today—such as erosion, sedimentation, and volcanism—are the same processes that shaped the Earth in the past. In simple terms, the present is the key to the past. The same idea can be applied to strategy. Current behaviors, decisions, and outcomes often provide clues about how an organization arrived at its current position. Rather than focusing only on historical explanations, leaders can learn a great deal by carefully observing what is happening today. Just as geologists use present-day processes to understand Earth's history, strategic leaders can use present-day patterns to better understand their organizations. Strategy lesson: The present often provides the best clues to understanding the past. #Geology #Strategy
