President Ramos-Horta was nearly exiled for calling for Timorese independence in the early 1970s in an interview with NT News journalist Ken White. “The article reached Lisbon and I was in big trouble,” he told us. President Ramos-Horta was only saved from exhile by the Carnation Revolution, which also kicked off Timor's brutal quarter-century of occupation by Indonesia.
