Lake Erie is a drinking water source for millions of Ohioans and Kent State researchers are working on ways to protect it. A new study led by biology professor David Costello, Ph.D., challenges what scientists assumed for decades: that streams like Rocky River, Tinkers Creek and the Chagrin river have plenty of nutrients that algae needs. His team, which included eight undergraduate students, found that many streams are iron deficient. “Controlling iron and zinc might be an additional management lever we could pull to address harmful algal blooms in rivers and Lake Erie,” said Costello. As an top research institution, Kent State’s faculty and students are making a real difference for our region. Click to read more: https://bit.ly/4xQLCyd
