"If one yearns to see the face of the Divine, one must break out of the aquarium, escape the fish farm, to go swim up wild cataracts, dive in deep fjords. One must explore the labyrinth of the reef, the shadows of the lily pads." -- Tom Robbins ================================================== (a fjord in the Sunnmøre region of Møre og Romsdal County, in Norway) The Geiranger Fjord is a 15-kilometer (9.3 mi)le -long branch off the Sunnylvsfjorden, which is a branch off the Storfjorden (Great Fjord). The small village of Geiranger is located at the end of the fjord where the Geirangelva river empties into it. The Geiranger Fjord is the world-famous, UNESCO-listed fjord that's on the agenda of nearly every visitor to Norway. One of the globe's great natural features, it is a majestic combination of huge cliffs, plunging waterfalls, and deep blue water that will not be soon forgotten. As many as a million visitors come here every ("normal") year to see the sights and many cruise ships dock at the port each Summer day. (At certain times you may be deprived of "peace and quiet," especially around the main port of Geiranger). Yet, out on the fjord itself, peace and tranquility are restored -- and a trip on the Geiranger–Hellesylt ferry should be a key part of your Norwegian adventure.
