Watch the trusty MD-80 show off its old-school 'power-back'-using reverse thrust to back itself away from the gate! while most modern jets rely on tugs, the MD-80 (and its DC-9/727 cousins) had aft-mounted engines and reversible clamshell buckets that technically allowed it. But why don't we see this anymore? Reverse thrust blasts debris (FOD) all over the ramp, bangs up terminals, guzzles fuel, and is loud enough to wake jet-lagged travelers; plus pilots can't see behind them. Video: bazukavia
