Why would anyone willingly add an extra year to medical school? Honestly, this is a question I also asked myself when deciding whether to take up an intercalated degree. The thought of leaving my classmates behind and watching them graduate a year before me? Then rejoining the class behind me? Let’s just say my ego was fighting for its life😂 But when I sat with the decision, something became very clear: You regret the things you didn’t do far more than the things you did. This opportunity was something I’d prayed for since my first week in med school something I worked for intentionally. Yet when it finally arrived, I found myself hesitating… mostly because of FOMO and the fear of “falling out of sync.” Then it hit me: growth rarely happens when we stay comfortable or perfectly aligned with everyone else. So I chose the degree. Not just for the academic and career benefits (though those are real), but to keep a promise to myself to take the chances I once dreamed about. Even if, 10 years from now, this degree doesn’t make as much of a difference as I hope, I’ll still be grateful that I bet on myself and took the chance Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is say yes to the opportunity that scares you just a little.🙂! Here’s to taking chances even the ones that add an extra year.
