Last week, Kekst CNC Tokyo, in collaboration with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Affiliates and the Japan Institute for Overseas Investment(JOI), hosted a hybrid seminar on energy and infrastructure. The event brought together professionals from Japanese energy and infrastructure companies, as well as representatives from legal and investment organizations. Speakers from Skadden and Kekst CNC across Houston, Dallas, and Tokyo included Mingda Zhao, Emery Choi, Jon Morgan, Akira Kumaki, and Ai Saito. The session, "Navigating Energy & Infrastructure Trends: Investment Opportunities, Legal Risks, Stakeholder Communication and Cross-Border Execution," explored how rising energy demand, increased joint venture activity, and geopolitical fragmentation are reshaping cross-border investment. Drawing on global case studies and examples relevant to Japanese companies, the discussion focused on four critical execution challenges that can influence transaction outcomes: timing risk, stakeholder mapping risk, alignment risk, and the importance of narratives tailored to local contexts. Speakers shared practical perspectives from both legal and communications standpoints on how organizations can anticipate and manage these challenges. Key takeaways included: ▫ Early integration of communications considerations alongside legal and deal processes ▫ Comprehensive stakeholder mapping and engagement planning ▫ Alignment across legal, communications, and business teams ▫ The importance of local market insight and stakeholder understanding ▫ Developing clear, consistent narratives tailored to local contexts ▫ Ensuring stakeholders understand a transaction’s strategic rationale The event concluded with an engaging networking session, highlighting the value of integrated legal and communications strategies in supporting successful cross-border transactions. Thank you to everyone who joined us, and special thanks to Ai Saito, moderator Sawaka Romaine, Yoshimi Imada, and Mai Beppu Walker for helping make the event a success.
