Bridging the gap between academic expertise and real-world industry requirements! Over the past few months, students from the Faculty of Computer Science at Technische Hochschule Rosenheim have been working closely with KATHREIN Solutions to tackle a practical use case through a hands-on software project. The goal was to enable native OPC UA communication on our Linux-based readers by connecting an open-source OPC UA library with the KATHREIN Reader Protocol (KBRP). This creates tangible value for industrial applications: OPC UA enables secure and vendor-independent data exchange, making it easier than ever to integrate RFID readers into existing automation, Industry 4.0, and Industrial IoT environments. A huge thank you to Sebastian Thiess, Mira-Jelena Zink, Richard Döring, Tamino Eisenschmid, Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Mühlbauer and Sebastian Dreyßig for your commitment and the excellent collaboration throughout the project. We would also like to thank TH Rosenheim for actively supporting projects that connect academic knowledge with real industrial challenges.
