Kathimerini English Edition 🙏 Digital Minoans - Branding Heritage The imposing Venetian Walls of Iraklio in Crete lit up with digital projections on September 7 as the cultural organisation Branding Heritage unveiled its “Digital Minoans” project during the city’s 2nd #Candia #Walls #Festival. The event coincided with the recent inscription of the Minoan Palaces on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Supported by the Greek Ministry of Culture, the project was developed in partnership with the Computational Design Studio (#Comdes), which used generative art technology to animate works inspired by Minoan frescoes, artifacts and myths, including the Labyrinth, the Phaistos Disc, and the figures of Icarus and Daedalus. Artists whose creations were digitally reinterpreted included Loukia Orfanou, Maria Galanaki, POLINA ELLIS Konstantina Kampisopoulou of The Artians and Yiannis Fragiadakis, a student at the Athens School of Fine Arts. Their work forms part of Branding Heritage’s “Contemporary Minoans” collection. An additional 18 works from the collection, by creators such as Alekos Fassianos, Sophia Kokosalaki and Mary Katrantzou, were displayed on the walls in dialogue with the digital installations. The projection concluded with a tribute to Cretan heritage, narrated by actress Peggy Trikalioti: “Crete continues to inspire. Eternal. Intact. Our heritage is not only remembrance. It is the beginning. It is the future. It is the light that guides us.” The event drew locals, visitors and officials, including Iraklio Mayor Alexis Kalokairinos. A digital version of the “Contemporary Minoans” collection will soon be available online in collaboration with Greece’s Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas.
