What started as an international student project became an opportunity to apply data science, AI and software engineering to a real-world maritime challenge. As part of the German-Polish IT-Track, our team developed a system that transforms raw AIS/GPS vessel data into meaningful insights about ship movements. The objective was to clean, analyse and visualise complex maritime data to better understand vessel routes, manoeuvres, port stays, anchoring behaviour and operational states. Throughout the project, I contributed to: - cleaning and preprocessing real-world movement data - analysing vessel behaviour from route patterns - supporting AI-based classification of operational states - creating visualisations that make complex data intuitive and accessible One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was combining data science, artificial intelligence and software engineering to solve a practical problem while collaborating in an international team. Working in English, documenting our work and presenting the results to researchers and maritime professionals made the experience even more valuable. Many thanks to Prof. Dr. Jens Hündling for his guidance and support throughout the project.
