Last year, Paekākāriki Community Board commissioned murals by leading artist Miriama Grace-Smith, detailing the powerful account of Ngāti Toa Rangatira and Te Āti Awa ancestor, Māreikura Kahe Te Rau‑o‑te‑rangi. It's an important part of the village’s mural trail, but since it's completion, the paint on the Paekākāriki water tank mural has not adhered correctly to the water tank and is unfortunately beginning to deteriorate. To ensure the mural is preserved for generations to learn from and admire, work is starting this week to protect Paekākāriki's water tank mural for the future. We’re working closely with the artist throughout the process, beginning with careful water blasting and sanding. The painted surface will then be replaced with a high‑quality vinyl wrap of the same design, which is better suited to the tank and more durable over time. Learn more about the pūrākau (traditional narrative) behind the mural, and admire it in person when the restoration works are complete 👉🏽 https://lnkd.in/e-kTN3hv
