Kaizen MUST be Everyday, Everywhere, by Everyone Although the terminology for improvement strategies has evolved over the years—from continuous quality improvement and total quality management to just-in-time and operational excellence, and from six sigma to lean manufacturing—the most effective strategies remain customer-focused, gemba-oriented, and driven by kaizen. Kaizen, as defined by the dictionary, means “continuous improvement of working practices, personal efficiency, etc., as a business philosophy.” In Japanese, kaizen translates to “continuous improvement.” This concept involves everyone—both managers and workers—and typically requires minimal expense. The kaizen philosophy emphasizes that our way of life should be centered on ongoing improvement efforts. While kaizen improvements may be small and incremental, the process can lead to significant results over time. Source: Imai, Masaaki.
