Alan is a renowned Jamaican British entertainer. After leaving college in 1941, he volunteered to join the Royal Navy, serving on a patrolling ship, escorting minesweepers, and picking up survivors in the West Indies. In 1944 he volunteered for Royal Air Force service and joined the air-sea rescue team.⁠ ⁠ In 1950, Wilmot became a member of the soulful Southlanders singing group – the first to achieve widespread success in the UK and the longest-running black chart-toppers in the 1950s.
