LOW WAGES AS INFLUENCED BY SWISS & SCANDINAVIAN It is well known that Hilbert, in his famous lecture of 1900, provided a list of major mathematical problems, greatly influencing the course of twentieth-century mathematical research. However, it is not known that it was Minkowski who suggested to Hilbert the topic for his lecture. Minkowski wrote to Hilbert in a letter: "The most effective thing would be to try to foresee the future, that is, to outline the problems that future mathematicians should be engaged in grappling with. In this way you can ensure that people will be discussing your lecture for decades to come." Minkowski and Hilbert were largely responsible for changing Einstein's view of mathematics from that of a mere tool of physical insight to that of a "distinct source of scientific creativity." Minkowski taught mathematics to Albert Einstein at the Zurich Polytechnic. He had no particular interest in Einstein as a student. The only student from the Polytechnic he mentioned in his correspondence with Hilbert was Walter Ritz (1878–1909).
