RIP David Mullane, the Glasgow-based champion of true designer fashion in the 1980s and 1990s. I understand he died on Monday. David's pioneering store The Warehouse, complete with excellent cafe-restaurant, was located in Glassford Street, Glasgow, away from the major shopping areas. He stocked all the top and exclusive names of the period from Commes des Garcons to Paul Smith, brands normally associated only with London retailers. After The Warehouse failed in the mid-1990s, David bounced back with W2, a neat boutique just off Byres Road in Glasgow that sells the likes of Norse Projects, Universal Works and Margaret Howell. He just loved fashion. He was involved with the shop until about three years ago even though he was in his mid 70s. He would have been 79 this month. David Dalby, whose Strand shops in Leeds and Newcastle operated in a similar niche, told me: "David gave me such a lot of advice when I first opened He was an unbelievable giant in UK retailing and an even better man." Check out this clip on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/e3jpDcTZ for David talking about The Warehouse.
