One of the greatest privileges of curating public art is helping artists see their work transformed on a scale they may never have imagined. When I first saw this painting by Ella Gillespie, I fell in love with it. There was something about the movement and depth that immediately drew me in. It never felt flat or two-dimensional. The longer you looked, the more the work revealed itself, inviting you to slow down and discover something new. Seeing that original painting become a billboard-scale artwork has been incredibly rewarding. Ella is an Awabakal contemporary artist who grew up on Bundjalung Country in Northern NSW, where a lifelong connection to the natural environment has shaped her artistic practice. Inspired by memories of exploring the Evans River, this work captures the quiet beauty of stingrays resting beneath crystal-clear water. Their gentle movements are traced through flowing white lines, echoing the graceful paths they leave behind as they glide through the shallows. The artwork is now on display at Gilbert Park Billboard (Cnr Ferntree Gully Road & Gilbert Park Drive, Knoxfield) as part of the annual Immerse Festival, where it will remain on display for the next 12 months.
