Bridging Theory and Practice: A Journey into Contemporary Tourism Leadership As part of my AD204 Business Communications course at Boğaziçi University, I recently had the incredible opportunity to step outside the classroom and conduct a semi-structured interview with an active tourism industry leader here in Istanbul: Salih Baturay Yıldız , the Accommodation & Logistics Manager at Akropol Travel Agency. This experiential learning project allowed me to align my personal mission—connecting global hospitality with innovative, sustainable tourism service management—with real-world professional insights. Throughout our 45-minute dialogue at Gayrettepe, we explored how abstract management theories directly serve as survival tools in today's volatile market: 📌 Storytelling in the Post-Truth Era: Salih shared how Akropol rejects polished corporate perfection in favor of "grounded storytelling" and radical transparency, proving that authentic human narratives are the ultimate currency of customer trust. 📌 Paradoxical Creativity & Agile EQ: Discussing the Competing Values Framework, he revealed how navigating a high-stress, peak-season overbooking crisis requires balancing strict logistical consistency with fluid, empathetic creative problem-solving. 📌 The Power of Weak Ties: We discussed how networking isn't just an exchange of business cards, but the cultivation of a complex, high-trust ecosystem of mutual reliance among local guides, boutique hotels, and partners. 💡 Key Takeaway: As a Management student, this project pushed me out of my comfort zone. Adapting to a completely new, dynamic Turkish tourism framework taught me that masterful business communication prioritizes adaptive empathy—the emotional intelligence to listen to human emotions before pitching structured logical solutions. Sincere thanks to Salih Baturay Yıldız for his generous time and invaluable leadership insights!
