In business, we often obsess over the "frictionless" user experience. But in doing so, do we accidentally strip away the soul? Think about the video of the Norwegian fans doing the Viking Row. Or the Scottish Tartan Army bringing their traffic cone humor to American streets. It requires effort. It requires you to sit on the ground, to lock arms, and to do something a little bit weird because everyone else is doing it. This is the Paradox of Friction : Sometimes, a little bit of friction is exactly what creates a community. Rituals require action. And that action is the bridge between an individual and a community. It’s why people who don't even care about soccer get pulled into the magic of the tournament, the ritual itself creates the belonging. In the market, elite brands understand this deeply: 🍪 Oreo turned a simple snack into an interactive "Twist, Lick, Dunk" routine. 🍺 Guinness turned a slow pour into a sacred 119.5-second ceremony. 🍎 Apple turned a simple white headphone cord into an era-defining ritual of alignment. If you give people a great product, they’ll give you their money. But if you give them a meaningful ritual, they’ll give you their loyalty. What is your brand's version of rowing the boat? I broke down the entire three levels of the Ritual Economy in this week's edition of Sipping & Branding.
