Did you know? Verner Frederik Løsøe Smidth, born May 28, 1850 in Kerteminde, was a Danish engineer and businessman. He grew up in Skive, began his education in 1866 at a machine factory in Randers, and then moved to Copenhagen. He received formal training in machine design in polytechnic apprenticeship in Copenhagen and then was a rapporteur at a machine factory in Germany. When he returned to Denmark in 1875, he worked as a designer in a company that manufactured machines for mill and brick industry. He started his own workshop business at his mother's house in Frederiksberg in 1882 and in 1884 he joined Poul Larsen and later also Alexander Foss. These became partners in the industry in 1887, which was called F.L. Smidth & Co started manufacturing machine equipment for cement production. Today, FLSmidth is one of world's leading providers of machinery and services in mineral and cement industry with branches in more than 50 countries and just under 15,000 employees (2012).
