Exploring Natural Selection Through the Unique Story of the Philippine Tarsier 🇵🇭 How can a small animal with enormous eyes teach us one of the most powerful concepts in biology? In my Biology class, I used the Philippine tarsier as an example to help students understand Natural Selection — the process where organisms with traits that provide an advantage in their environment are more likely to survive and pass those traits to future generations. I chose the tarsier because it is one of the most fascinating and unique animals found in the Philippines. This tiny primate, known for its large forward-facing eyes, exceptional hearing, and powerful hind legs, has evolved adaptations that help it survive as a nocturnal hunter in forest ecosystems. Fun fact: The Philippine tarsier is one of the world’s smallest primates and can rotate its head almost 180 degrees! Its large eyes help it see in low-light conditions, allowing it to hunt insects at night. Its specialized fingers and strong legs also help it move quickly and quietly among trees. Through the tarsier’s story, students can see that evolution is not about organisms “trying” to change, but about how beneficial inherited traits become more common over many generations because they improve survival and reproduction. Connecting science concepts to real-world examples, especially from our own country’s biodiversity, helps students appreciate the beauty of evolution and understand the importance of protecting unique species like the Philippine tarsier.
