Since the 2001 American Academy of Neurology Neurology publication of the Honolulu-Asia Aging Study a link has been established between constipation and Parkinson's disease. Constipation is one of the more frequent and troublesome non-motor symptoms of the earlier as well as the later stages of Parkinson's disease. Interactions along the gut-brain axis have intrigued researchers ever since. Therefore, to celebrate World Microbiome Day we would like to highlight the newest paper in the 7th World Parkinson Congress (#WPC2026) Special Issue (https://lnkd.in/erYNZ7rX), this time about "Rationale and current status of fecal microbiota transplantations for Parkinson's disease". This beautifully written paper by the group also behind the GUT-PARFECT trial at UZ Gent (https://lnkd.in/eEEzK5qx) provides you with a comprehensive overview and thorough discussion of the state of the field: from brain-first versus body-first phenotypes, over microbiome alterations to a critical reappraisal of the therapeutic potential of fecal microbiota transplantation. Look no further, you can read the full text here: https://lnkd.in/eeq7D-JB by Arnout Bruggeman, Roosmarijn Vandenbroucke & Patrick Santens with great figures by Charysse Vandendriessche Highlight written by Bruno Bergmans Bas Bloem Lorraine Kalia
