Hope or erosion? Humor, cynicism, and the leadership challenge in perioperative medicine This conceptual analysis by Benjamin Marten, Dr. Silke Mischke, and Markus M. Luedi examines how humor and cynicism function as psychological defense mechanisms in the high-pressure environment of the operating room. Drawing on psychoanalytic theory, leadership science, and evidence from medicine and organizational psychology, the authors argue that psychological maturity, expressed through inclusive humor, mindfulness, and reflective leadership, shapes teamwork, psychological safety, and ultimately patient care.
