“L’Europe se fera dans les crises et sera la somme des solutions apportées à ces crises.”- Jean Monnet in his memoirs in 1976. What struck me in Brussels last week was how uncomfortably relevant these words feel today. Trade-offs between security, competitiveness, affordability and sustainability are no longer theoretical. They are very real. Europe has never moved from comfort. As Monnet predicted in the 1970s, it has leapfrogged from crisis to crisis, when inaction became impossible. Yes, this modus operandi is messy, but it has achieved great things. So the question then is not whether Europe is crisis-driven - history answers that - but rather whether in today’s harsh global realities, the EU can still turn pressure into progress. My hunch - it can and it will! 🇪🇺💪 Big thanks to my wonderful and extremely knowledgeable colleagues in our Brussels office Olav Aamlid Syversen, Alessia Endellini Tomás Goldstein Chiara Merlo Marte Røv for organising an educational, inspiring and motivating visit for Equinor’s Corporate Sustainability Management Team to the capital of Europe. And a special thanks to Fabian Zuleeg at the European Policy Center for sharing his views and insights and setting the scene for our visit. Ilse Castellanos Claes Åbyholm Kevin Massy Peter Marcus K.
