Following the passing of Robert Oliver, an influential leader in DeWitt County, Texas, I was reminded of how important it is to recognize those who quietly shape our communities through a lifetime of service. Leaders like these deserve to have their stories told, not just for today, but for future generations to understand what service above self truly looks like. I had the privilege of interviewing Mr. Blackwell in his office, and with the help of his wife, Nancy, and their three daughters, I was able to bring to life the story of a truly monumental figure in our community. Every community has leaders who give back, invest in others, and leave things better than they found them.
