Last week, I had the incredible honor of attending the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) National Convention and participating in the LULAC Academy as a scholarship recipient. LULC Academy covered critical topics such as financial literacy, Latiné narratives in media, migration, and the climate crisis, equipping us with knowledge to better serve and advocate for our communities. The convention itself was a powerful reminder of our collective potential, providing the opportunity to connect with over 500 Latino leaders from across the country—each bringing unique perspectives, experiences, and a shared dedication to justice. We heard from courageous leaders like Representative Christina Morales and Representative James Talerico of the Texas House, who are risking their safety to oppose a gerrymandered map in defense of their constituents’ rights. We also learned from trailblazers such as Iliana G. Perez, Ph.D., Gaby Pacheco, and the legendary Dolores Huerta—all of whom have spent their lives advancing equity and dignity for our people. I leave us all with this: Conformity is not an option. We cannot live as though the injustices around us do not affect us—they already have. Our communities face racial oppression, the erosion of rights, and family separations. The time to act is now. Talk to your neighbors. Build coalitions. Stand together.
