The conversation around the auto industry has been dominated by EV adoption, tariffs, and affordability. But Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe recently highlighted something I think deserves even more attention: software may be the biggest competitive advantage in the next generation of vehicles. That's a perspective worth paying attention to. For decades, automakers competed on horsepower, styling, fuel economy, and manufacturing efficiency. Those things still matter but today's customers increasingly judge their vehicles by the technology they interact with every day. How quickly does the infotainment system respond? Can features improve through over-the-air updates? Does the vehicle integrate seamlessly with their digital life? Those experiences are becoming just as important as what's under the hood. For dealers, this shift changes the conversation on the showroom floor. The best sales professionals won't just explain trim levels and horsepower. They'll confidently demonstrate connected features, software updates, driver assistance systems, and the ownership experience that continues long after the customer drives off the lot. For F&I managers, service advisors, and dealership leadership, it also reinforces why continuous training matters. The products are becoming more sophisticated, and customer expectations are rising right alongside them. Whether Rivian ultimately wins or not isn't really the point. The bigger lesson is that the industry is evolving from building great cars to delivering great technology experiences. The manufacturers and dealerships, that embrace that reality will be better positioned for the next decade than those treating software as an afterthought. It’s starting to look like the future of automotive may be written in code.
