Eli Lilly and Company is continuing to make acquisitions with its most recent purchase of 4E Therapeutics Inc.. This is the 11th acquisition made by the pharmaceutical giant in this year alone. 4E Therapeutics is an Austin, Texas based company focused on non-opioid pain management medications. The company's early-stage pipeline consists of oral MNK inhibitors to treat pain in patients with neuropathic, migraine, and acute pain. These drugs are aimed to target the MNK-eIF4E pathway in the peripheral nervous system, while avoiding CNS side effects related to opioid drugs. 4E is the only company targeting this pathway, and now Eli Lilly has another unique item as part of its portfolio. The amount of the acquisition has not been disclosed however SiteOne Therapeutics, Inc. Therapeutics, another startup developing non-opioid pain medications, was acquired by Eli Lilly for $1 billion the previous year. In addition to these acquisitions, Eli Lilly has its own non-opioid projects such as an epiregulin antibody (LY3848575), and antagonist of the angiotensin II type 2 receptor (LY4065967). As analysts point out, this recent wave of acquisitions is a result of the company using its success with weight loss drugs to capture the next “blockbuster medicines”. Do you think non-opioid pain management has the potential to be a game changer in the future? Let us know your thoughts.
