What happens when thousands of cruise passengers arrive in a small city every day? For years, summer tourism in Juneau, Alaska created a connectivity challenge. As cruise ships docked and passengers flooded the downtown area, local cellular networks often became overloaded. To solve the problem, the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) partnered with North River IT to build an extensive public Wi-Fi network covering the cruise docks and downtown district. The deployment includes: ✅ XE3-4TN tri-band outdoor access points ✅ 60 GHz cnWave wireless backhaul + 850E 80 GHz ✅ Cambium switching infrastructure ✅ Passpoint 2.0 for carrier offload The result? Visitors and residents now enjoy reliable, free Wi-Fi throughout the area, while terabytes of mobile traffic are seamlessly offloaded from congested cellular networks. It's a great example of how municipalities can improve visitor experiences and expand connectivity without dramatically increasing operational complexity. The deployment was completed in a mater of months without any trenching or disruptions to the community. I'm proud to have played a small role in the design and development of this project! Kudos to the North River IT team for their great work on this deployment.
