I am saddened to hear of the passing of Jürgen Habermas (1929-2026) earlier today at the age of 96. I vividly remember reading his "Legitimationsprobleme im Spätkapitalismus" (translated as Legitimation Crisis, Beacon Press 1975) during a summer bike and camping trip across the island of Sardinia, Italy. It was not the easiest campfire reading. I have always been intrigued by his lifelong search for the foundations of deliberative democracy and particularly his efforts over the past twenty years to rethink its normative foundations. Rest in peace.
