Knowing things and fixing stuff
LEADERSHIP IN TODAY’S BANI-WORLD Based on corresponding feedback from recent employee surveys, this weekend the entire EMEA Executive Team of Joyson Safety Systems reflected on Leadership capabilities, own ones as well as on the ones throughout our organization. Current multiple crises, such as already devastating consequences of climate change, disruption in the European automotive industry, geopolitical tensions, armed conflicts on a scale that was no longer thought possible, significant losses in consumer's purchasing power due to dramatic price developments, housing shortages, energy supply issues and others, are causing considerable emotional stress for many people, of course including employees. So, what is it, that leaders can do to counteract uncertainty and fear resulting from such developments? In intense discussions, participants discussed for example their own experiences as employees reporting to a superior to identify and understand differences. What did the best manager we ever had do right, and how did the worst manager we ever had act? And what level of professional maturity were we ourselves at that point? Open and comprehensive communication is certainly a good start, as is promoting emotional intelligence so that managers can better understand and respond to perceived situations of employees, jointly developing approaches to strengthen abilities to act, one's own willingness to adapt to a "new reality", to use iterative processes and further options for action. There is hardly anything worse than perceiving oneself as a victim of circumstances, and hardly anything better than seeing oneself as co-creator of the future, both of the company and of one's own.
