During my time in Milano recently, I had the opportunity, together with the board of the National Italian American Foundation, to sit down with Milano Mayor Giuseppe Sala and regional leadership of the Regione Lombardia, including President Attilio Fontana and Raffaele Cattaneo, undersecretary for international and European relations, to discuss infrastructure, sustainability, and the region’s economic direction. It’s clear that 2026 is being treated as an inflection point, a means to reinforce infrastructure, mobility, and institutional resilience. That philosophy was integrated in much of the infrastructure associated with how Milano-Cortina 2026 was designed with long-term community impact in mind. Most venues rely on existing or temporary facilities to reduce waste, and major projects like the Milan Olympic Village are being repurposed for student housing and public use after the Games.
