Every generation, blames the one before. And all of their frustrations, Come beating on your door. In sport the Silent Generation wondered when the GAA ban on playing "foreign games" could be lifted? Our Baby Boomers wondered when our first tartan running track could be built? Gen X couldn't believe we still had no 50m swimming pool in Ireland (some parts of the country have no public indoor pool whatsoever to this day). Millennials thought soccer or rugby could never come to Croker. Gen Z thought they get a Velodrome but the Alphas now feel they could be waiting quite a while too. We may be a sports fan mad country but we are not good at building sports infrastructure for wider participation. We can blame previous generations but it’s up to us to highlight how slow we are. In the latest Out of Sight with Joe G podcast Martin Gordon explains how he spent many weekends travelling the western world, tandem at hand, in search of a Velodrome to prepare for the last two Paralympic Games.
