Depression and other mental health conditions cost the European economy an estimated €600 billion every year, equivalent to 4% of EU GDP. Of that, approximately €89.2 billion is linked directly to lost productivity. Additionally, a Danish cohort study showed people living with mental health conditions lose an average of 10.5 years of working life. Early intervention matters: a shorter duration of untreated illness is associated with up to 1.7x higher response rates. Data shows that between 2010 and 2025, the FDA approved 62 psychiatric treatments, compared with 23 approvals by the European Medicines Agency. Improving mental health outcomes in Europe can be achieved through an integrated approach: prevention, early intervention, timely access to evidence-based mental healthcare, and ongoing psychiatric innovation.
