On January 13, Ana Isabel Barros delivered a keynote at the Policing in the Digital Society Network Annual Conference*, hosted by the Norwegian Police University College (Politihøgskolen) in Oslo. The network brings together researchers and practitioners to examine how digitalization reshapes policing and criminal justice, under this year’s theme “Looking into the Future.” In her keynote, “When AI Meets Intelligence-Led Policing,” Ana addressed the dual reality of AI in the security domain: it can enhance detection and analysis, while also intensifying complexity, dependency, and risk. Her talk emphasized the need for critical thinking, proportionality, and human oversight in high-stakes environments. As Endowed Professor at JADS - Jheronimus Academy of Data Science in Data Science and AI in the field of Organized and Subversive Crime, Ana Isabel Barros operates at the intersection of research, law enforcement, and applied innovation. Her work reflects the mission of our Center for Data Science and AI against Organized and Subversive Crime: developing data-driven approaches that are operationally relevant, legally grounded, and socially responsible.
