NASA's Psyche spacecraft is on its way to explore a rare, metal-rich asteroid. In May, it got a speed boost by flying close to Mars and using the Red Planet’s gravity to slingshot the spacecraft toward its target. As it swooped within about 2,800 miles (4,500 km) of the Martian surface, Psyche captured this series of high-resolution images. The team also used the opportunity to test and calibrate the spacecraft’s science instruments in a dry run for arriving at the asteroid in 2029.
