GitLab just started rebuilding git from scratch. Not their platform. Git - the version control system that's been the foundation of software development for 20 years. CEO Bill Staples said it on the earnings call this week: "Agents work at machine scale, and they're pushing competitors to the brink. This quarter we began a generational rebuild of git to support the scale and features required for 100x growth." GitLab posted 23% revenue growth and 88% gross margins in the same breath. The restructuring isn't a distress signal. It's a capacity problem: the infrastructure that was built for humans committing code can't handle what agents are doing to it. GitHub is dealing with the same thing - massive influx of AI-powered submissions affecting its uptime. The two biggest developer platforms on earth are both hitting the same wall at the same time. This is the part of the agentic transition that doesn't get talked about enough. Everyone focuses on whether agents can write good code. The harder problem is whether the infrastructure underneath can absorb what happens when agents write code at machine speed, all day, every day, across every team. GitLab is betting it can build that infrastructure. That's what "Act 2" actually is - not a product pivot, a platform rebuild for a world where agents are the primary users. https://lnkd.in/eZ2DQmWF
