Going back to Uni.📌 What if universities measured success not only by the degrees they award, but by the lives they help rebuild? That question stayed with me long after I left the University of Westminster’s Public Community Engagement event, where I had the privilege of delivering the keynote. For someone who once experienced the criminal justice system from the inside, standing in front of a room full of people asking how education can become a bridge, not a barrier for people in prison was deeply moving. The room was filled with extraordinary humans. Academics. Students. Researchers. Community leaders. Practitioners. Every conversation carried the same quiet determination, how do we use our knowledge, influence and institutions to serve those who have too often been overlooked? That is civic responsibility in its truest form. Not simply talking about inequality. But choosing to do something about it. The day shone a spotlight on the role universities can play within the criminal justice space, challenging perceptions, opening doors, creating opportunities and ensuring that education reaches those who need it most. It reminded me that rehabilitation is not solely the responsibility of prisons. It belongs to all of us. At Beyond The Sentence, we believe every life holds more than one story. We believe that justice should not just be about punishment, but the creation of possibility. We believe that lived experience deserves a seat at the table, that belief grows through opportunity. That when education, community and compassion come together, extraordinary things become possible. My deepest thanks to Sobia Razzaq for the incredibly kind invitation, for your leadership, your warmth and for creating a space where difficult conversations became hopeful ones. Thank you also to everyone I had the privilege of meeting and speaking too. Dr Kumari Juddoo Anna Christodoulou Sheena Patel Himanshu Jain Sheeja Sivaprasad Shaid P. I leave inspired by the connections we have made, energised by the collaborations ahead and grateful to be walking alongside so many people committed to building a more just and compassionate society. I often say that we judge a society by how it treats those with the least power. After today, I am reminded that there are many people quietly choosing to rewrite that story. With Metta and Love Over Fear. 🙏🏽💜✊🏽 People often ask me what I do? The short answer… I am helping children not yet born to live in a more equitable society than I was born into. The longer answer… Hi, I am Jazz, Londoner and Founder of Beyond The Sentence and Founder of EmpowerAbility. Global Freedom Fellow and Consultant with Incarceration Nations Network / INN. Board Trustee at Spark Inside. Advisory Council Member at Responsible Business Initiative for Justice. Emotive storyteller, international keynote, facilitates with impact and fun!
