Excited to share latest project done by our students from scratch during ROS2 Robotics Summer Internship: Autonomous ROS 2 Multi-Robot Navigation and Mapping System! 🤖🌐 organized jointly by the Department of @ECE JUIT and @CSE/IT DEPARTMENT JUIT, Waknaghat as an initiative under DROBOTICS LAB JUIT During ROS2 Robotics Summer Internship, they developed a system designed to tackle one of the most fundamental challenges in robotics: autonomous exploration and mapping in unknown environments. 🎯 The Main Aim The primary goal was to create a robot capable of being dropped into any new environment and having it autonomously map the entire area while avoiding obstacles in real-time. Additionally, the system can dynamically plan and execute paths between two defined points, adjusting its trajectory on the fly to bypass unforeseen hurdles. ⚙️ How It Works (Technicalities) The project leverages the power of ROS 2 to orchestrate seamless communication between high-level processing and low-level hardware control. Mapping & Navigation: The students integrated the Slam Toolbox for generating maps of unknown spaces and Nav2 for the autonomous navigation logic. Real-Time Optimization: Unlike traditional setups that use ultrasonic sensors—which often require the robot to stop and "check" their surroundings—they used RP-Lidar. This allows the robot to scan its environment continuously and move in a "live" manner, identifying free directions and adjusting its motion instantly without pausing. Visualization: They used Rviz2 to monitor the real-time mapping process, allowing us to see exactly how the robot perceives its environment and plans its path.
