Did you know that practical gastrocameras,🔬 now used around the world, were first developed in Japan? In 1950, Dr. Tatsuro Uji 🧑⚕️ from the Department of Surgery at University of Tokyo Hospital and what is now Olympus developed this technology through industry-academia collaboration. Endoscopy first spread as a way to “see” inside the body, and later evolved into treatment as well, including the removal of lesions. Today, endoscopes support AI-assisted diagnosis and visualize affected areas more clearly with 3D and 4K high-resolution imaging. They can also be used to “treat” by inserting instruments through the tip. By shifting from large incisions to minimally invasive procedures, Japan’s endoscopic technology is helping make medical care more precise and less invasive for patients.
