One thing I try to teach apprentices is not to rush straight to the most complicated answer. When something goes wrong in the workshop, it is very easy to start changing things. ย โ€ข Adjust the program. ย โ€ข Move an offset. ย โ€ข Change a tool. ย โ€ข Alter the speed. ย โ€ข Try something else. But changing too many variables at once can confuse the issue. If the problem improves, you do not know which change fixed it. If it gets worse, you have created even more variables to work through. This is especially true with things like small taps breaking in stainless steel. Before blaming the tap, the program, or the machine, we need to slow down and ask better questions. ย โ€ข Is the tapping drill size correct? ย โ€ข Did the drill cut properly? ย โ€ข Has the hole work hardened? ย โ€ข Is the hole deep enough? ย โ€ข Is the tool right for the material? ย โ€ข Is the setup solid? That process of elimination is where real machining skill develops. AI, software, and automation can all help us. But standing in front of a machine, reading the situation, proving the basics, and knowing which variable to eliminate next โ€” that is still the skill of the machinist and engineer. Iโ€™ve written a longer article on this because I think this mindset is one of the most important things we can pass on to apprentices. Machines can run programs. Good engineers solve problems.
