We built a fully functional game using vanilla JavaScript with no experience in 48 hours. Over the weekend Kaleb McKeown Michael Chen and I developed League of Lemonade 🍋- a “Cool Math Games” style educational web based game as part of UQ Computing Society (UQCS) Game Jam hackathon. The game follows the story of a kid selling lemonade and managing money to purchase their dream bike 🚲. Along the way, players complete interactive mini games focused on numeracy and decision making. The key focus of the game was integrating educational principles in areas that are typically difficult to learn in an interactive way. Using the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) grade 5 numeracy standards we incorporated core maths 🧮 concepts into the gameplay. With no experience, the team learnt the basics of game development and as a result felt the steep learning curve. We learnt the fundamentals of JavaScript, HTML, CSS and Git Hub collaboration. But by the end of the weekend we were able to produce a fully functional web based game with minimal bugs. Lots was learnt during the 48 hours and as a team we have plenty to take forward into other projects. Including not using light mode in front of CS students 😩
