There are moments when an event becomes more than a gathering—it becomes a movement of the heart, mind, and spirit. We recently collaborated with Beyond The Book: A Literary Experience for an unforgettable Pre-Father’s Day “Bourbon & Blazers” evening featuring the extraordinarily gifted Darrin Dewitt Henson—actor, author, artist, choreographer, and a man whose journey reflects resilience, purpose, and faith. What began as a standing-room-only book signing quickly transformed into something much deeper. Welcoming the rich notes of our local award-winning female owned bourbon, Good Trouble, by Dee Robinson, an insightful podcast conversation led by Dr. Tenia Davis, and an intimate dialogue with Darrin, we were all invited into a space of transparency, self-discovery, and personal accountability. The energy in the room was undeniable. The love was present. The faith was evident. The community was plugged in. In a world where we often celebrate the performance of success, Darrin reminded us of the importance of doing the internal work—the healing, the reflection, and the growth required to truly walk in our purpose. Now, I would be remiss if I did not mention my attempt to get him to give us a live demonstration of his iconic, MTV award winning “Bye Bye Bye” choreography with *NSYNC to close us out. While the dance never happened, what we received was far greater—wisdom, vulnerability, and life-changing lessons that will remain with us long after the evening ended. One message from Darrin continues to resonate: “You have to GO through it, before you can GROW through it, allowing you to GLOW through it. “ What a powerful reminder that our elevation is connected to our willingness to evolve. My sincere gratitude to Darrin Dewitt Henson, Dr. Tenia Davis, Good Trouble Bourbon, and the entire Beyond The Book family for creating a sacred space where Black men and women, families, and our broader community could gather, share, heal, learn, and celebrate one another. This is why spaces like these matter. I believe that when we create environments rooted in culture, conversation, literacy, faith, and love—we don’t simply host events… we build legacy.
