I hid my giant head outside our atelier window. People are asking if it's AI and the answer is NOT a clean "no." This is a Gaussian splat: a scan of the real world. Our atelier, captured with cameras, virtually explorable from any angle. And yes, there's machine learning under the hood: the algorithm is trained, through millions of optimization steps, to reconstruct the scene until it matches the photos. But it's not generative AI. Nothing is imagined, nothing is invented, no prompts. The ML isn't making things up, everything you see actually exists. And now I can play with it. :D The head is me. I scanned myself while looking directly into the camera at all times of the scan, and the eye contact got encoded into the splat itself. Wherever the virtual camera moves, the eyes follow. I didn't animated it. it's a property of how the capture works. Scored with Dvořák's 9th, because if you're going to be haunted by your own head, do it properly.
