China just published the answer to a question India is still getting wrong. Zhaopin data reported by SCMP this year: AI skills are now required in 4 out of 10 graduate job postings in China. Not AI jobs. Ordinary jobs. And on 3 July, China's labour ministry said 5,000+ firms posted over 200,000 AI vacancies in a single month, with the new titles being AI product manager and AI medical researcher. Healthcare. Manufacturing. Consumer services. AI is turning into a requirement, not a job title. India is staring at the same trend and drawing a different conclusion. Bain projects 2.3 million AI job openings in India by 2027 against a qualified talent pool of roughly 1.2 million. Almost every professional I talk to reads that gap as one instruction: go become an ML engineer. That lane is the 1.2 million. It is crowded, and it is the only lane the market is already training for. The 1.1 million shortfall does not close by producing more model builders. It closes the way China's is closing, with AI attaching itself to work that already exists. Naukri JobSpeak's June 2026 data shows the early shape of it: AI and ML roles up 25% year on year while overall IT hiring moderated. So the question is not whether you can build the model. It is whether the market can find an analyst, a PM, an ops lead, a clinical researcher who does your job with AI attached, and whether that person turns out to be you.
