𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆, 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗿, 𝘀𝗺𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁? In intelligent transport, we often focus on the systems, sensors, signals, enforcement cameras, geofencing, data platforms, AI and automation. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲, 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗲. People do not always behave like rational road users. They are rushed, distracted, uncertain, frustrated, influenced by others, or simply responding to the environment around them. A driver ignoring a lane-keeping warning, a scooter rider breaking a geofence, or a pedestrian crossing against the signal may all be revealing the same thing: 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘳. If ITS is to deliver its full potential, 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 needs to sit alongside 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆.
