An abandoned tannery village in Sicily, frozen in time since the early 1900s, has just reopened after a 20 million euro restoration. And it has a remarkable story to tell. The Cunziria, a hamlet beneath Vizzini in Sicily, reopened on July 4 with 12 rebuilt complexes, 48 rooms and underground spaces, and an ancient mill being transformed into a honey laboratory. Giovanni Verga set Cavalleria Rusticana and La Lupa among its stones, later drawing the cameras of Franco Zeffirelli in 1983 and Gabriele Lavia in 1997. "The village speaks. Even silence has a voice," said Mayor Salvatore Ferraro Vizzini. Asked how he imagines the site in five years, he answered simply: "Alive. Alive." The rebirth was driven by Lorenzo Muscoso a film director born in Vizzini who launched the recovery project in 2013. "A village is not saved by restoration alone, but by a cultural vision capable of generating identity, participation, and a future." Nicola Lattanzi professor at Open Lab - IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca put it sharply: "Cunziria's value is not the 20 million euros of restoration, but the cultural vision behind it." Funded through Italy's PNRR as part of a national programme rescuing 21 endangered villages, the new Cunziria is a metaborgo fusing heritage with immersive digital installations, photovoltaic panels, and electric-only transport. It projects 330 days of activity, 40 cultural events, and 30,000 visitors a year. nello musumeci, Italy's minister for civil protection, called it "the end of the beginning" and proposed it as a national pilot for reviving Italy's depopulating inland areas. "A place does not empty out for lack of love. It empties because people feel deprived of the freedom to express themselves." The Cunziria, forgotten no longer, now argues the opposite case. 🇮🇹 📖 Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/eHpzFxzU By Alina Trabattoni, PhD for Italy Now #Cunziria #Vizzini #Sicily #Borghi #Italy #Heritage #PNRR #GiovanniVerga #ItalyNow #CulturalHeritage #Metaborgo #SmallTowns #SustainableTourism #Sicilia #ItalianCulture #Restoration #CavalleriaRusticana #IMTLucca Salvatore Ferraro Lorenzo Muscoso Nicola Lattanzi Open Lab - IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca nello musumeci Alina Trabattoni, PhD Sabina Castelfranco Italy Now
