Free and fair elections don't just happen. Here are 8 ways you can help protect them. 1. Help more people vote. Too many eligible voters sit out due to confusion or no plan. Help friends and family register, make a voting plan, and share accurate information in your networks. Even small bumps in turnout can shape outcomes. 2. Become an election worker. Elections run on a large, temporary workforce — and shortages cause long lines that discourage voting. Sign up to be a poll worker and encourage others to do the same. Well-staffed polls mean smooth, accessible elections for everyone. 3. Stand with your election officials. Election officials are facing rising pressure and harassment. Attend local election board meetings, speak up in support of fair administration, and send a thank-you message to your local officials. Public support helps them do their jobs with confidence and integrity. 4. Stop election misinformation. False claims spread fast and erode trust. Share verified information from trusted sources, respectfully correct misinformation when you see it, and encourage people to check where information came from before sharing it. People trust info from people they know — your voice matters. 5. Hold leaders accountable. Some officials may attempt to pressure election workers, manipulate rules, or cast doubt on lawful results. Support leaders who defend free and fair elections, and speak out when your elected officials spread false claims or enable manipulation or misconduct. Accountability from the bottom stops pressure from the top. 6. Volunteer as an election observer or poll watcher. Sign up, learn the rules and voter protections in advance, and encourage others to do the same. Responsible oversight builds transparency and public confidence. 7. Know how to report issues. Voter intimidation and interference can happen in real time. If you see something, report it immediately. Call the Election Protection Hotline at 866-687-8683. Timely reporting through official channels means problems get fixed fast. 8. Stay engaged year-round. Election protection doesn't start and end on Election Day. Stay informed on election policy, support nonpartisan protection efforts, and keep talking about voting all year long. Strong elections are built over time — not just in November. Remember: Free and fair elections aren't guaranteed — they're built by everyday Americans like you. For more on how you can get involved, check out our election toolkit in the comments.
